Presentation about radio calls should use, you know, radio calls

You are here: Home / Gallery / Presentation about radio calls should use, you know, radio calls

This slide comes from a presentation on the Boy Scout Radio Merit Badge. For a Merit Badge about audio signals, this slide sure requires a lot of reading!

Before

BSA merit badge slide before

This slide is typical of what we’ve seen a thousand times: great information, but too much text! This presentation is for boys whose ages range from about 11–17. You think they’ll find this slide boring? Heck, even adults can be bored by this slide.

This slide has three main points, which need to be separated to break the information down into manageable bites. For the redesign, I’ll address just the first opint.

After

Instead of describing emergency radio calls, how about letting the boys actually listen to a couple?

For the definition of “MAYDAY,” I found an image of a small propeller plane and added audio of an actual emergency call. (All you planespotters, don’t hate on me because the registration number on the plane doesn’t match the one in the call. You’ll just have to suspend your disbelief.) And for the definition of “SOS” I have a picture of a ham radio operator and an audio recording of SOS being transmitted in Morse Code.

In conclusion…

Writing about audio is like singing about a painting. To experience what an emergency call is like, you have to listen to one.
