Designing a better quadrant graphic

You are here: Home / Gallery / Designing a better quadrant graphic

You know those graphics with 4 equal pie slices with words and icons in them? They’re a pain in the neck to work with. Here’s a better graphic.

Before

I don’t know what these are called, so I’m going with “quadrant graphic.” I’m sure you’ve seen them a million times. They have problems…  Before: Quadrant graphic

Problem 1: Curves ahead

Have you ever tried to evenly position stuff within a quarter-circle? It’s a huge drag! It’s like trying to shove a square peg into a round hole.

Problem 2: Randomness

The captions seem to be randomly placed within each quadrant.

Problem 3: Teeny-weeny stuff

The text and icons are very small and get lost within the wedges.

Problem 4: Color competition

Because the text and icons are both white, they compete for our attention

After

After: Quadrant graphic

Solution 1–3

It is soooooo much easier to work with squares than with quarter-circles. Changing the pie slices into squares made it easy to fix the problems related to text alignment and size, as well as icon size.

Solution 4

I made each icon a light version of the background it sits on. This enables viewers to read the captions first, since they identify the quadrants. After that, they can enjoy the pretty icons!

In conclusion…

Do yourself a favor and create square quadrant graphics, not circles. They’re much easier to work with and they look just as cool as the circle kind.
